How to: Dining Room Lighting

Dining room lighting

You’ve found the perfect dining table and chairs and now you are looking to set the mood with lighting. To help you with your buying decision, we’ve provided answers to three common lighting questions that buyers face.

How high should I hang my light fixture?

Pendant lighting should be hung low enough to define the space and create a connection between the table and light fixture, but not so low that it obstructs views when seated. 28” to 32” works well, as a general rule.

What style of fixture will look best with my table?

Create a cohesive look between your dining furniture and lighting by choosing shapes and proportions that complement each other. When working with a round dining table, use a sphere, cone or cylinder shaped pendant fixture to reinforce the curved lines of the table. When working with a rectangular table, use a pair of pendants – or a series of smaller drop pendants – to balance the table’s length and distribute the light evenly (like the Tino pendant).

I don’t have any electrical above my dining table. What can I do?

When working with a dining room that lacks electrical wiring overhead, use an arc-style floor lamp for a unique alternative to overhead pendant lighting (like the Cast or Kaslo lamps).
